A busy Memorial Day weekend is taking shape in Frankenmuth. "This is the Great Lakes Regional Michigan State Hot Air Balloon Championships. We have over 30 hot air balloons and our evening glow entertainment as well," River Place General Manager Michael Zehnder said.
One of those balloons made an unscheduled landing this morning in a Birch Run backyard, all in the name of healthy competition.
"There's never been a Great Lakes Regional, and the winner of this will qualify for the nationals next year in Battle Creek," Volunteer Coordinator Nancy Engel said.
Aside from balloons, expect to see plenty of tails wagging near River Place. Around 3,000 dogs and their owners are coming to town for Frankenmuth's fourth annual Dog Bowl.
"This is like the dog invasion of Frankenmuth. We have over 21 events, all dog-related," Zehnder said.
Those events include everything from costume contests to wiener dog races. Meanwhile, the Pro Plan Rally Across America Tour will take the opportunity to promote their national campaign.
Melissa Heeter is the Rally to Rescue coordinator. "We want people to get involved and help us reach our goal of adopting 400,000 pets by the end of the year."
Rally to Rescue is working with several area organizations this weekend to help place dogs like Sadie and Richie in good homes.
"We want people to come out and meet pugs, find out what they're personalities are like. We will talk to them about the adoption process," Michigan Pug Rescue representative Larry Nathan.
By the end of the weekend, Rally to Rescue hopes people will come to realize that rescue dogs like Viola make good pets.
