At the height of the economic downturn, government workers employed at more than 15 different California agencies were making salaries of $300,000 or more, according to a new report from California Controller John Chiang.

The controller is investigating if government officials are being overpaid in the wake of the Bell City scandal.

One of the higher paid employees listed in the report is John Schatz who is the general manager of the Santa Margarita Water District. Schatz earned more than $376,000 in 2009.

The chief executive of the Exposition Metro Line Construction Authority, Richard Thorpe, made nearly $372,000 in 2009.

Former Metrolink Chief Executive David Solow made more than $340,000.
