Thousands of Calif. teachers to get layoff notices

SACRAMENTO

More than 7,000 pink slips have been given to teachers and other staffers in the L.A. Unified School District alone.

A $400 million budget deficit and the loss of federal stimulus money are the main reasons for the cuts.

Gov. Jerry Brown has proposed a tax extension plan to help prevent a $6 billion hit to school funding. The proposal could be on the ballot as early as June. However, many GOP leaders oppose the plan.
