President Obama has signed a disaster declaration to help California recover from tsunami damage caused by Japan's 9.0-magnitude earthquake.

State officials say a powerful wave caused about $48 million worth of damage, mostly in the harbors in Crescent City and Santa Cruz.

The disaster declaration allows state and local governments to seek federal funding for emergency repair work.

That could save the state as much as $25 million in repair costs.
