Armed man killed by police gunfire in Oxnard

OXNARD, Calif.

Authorities say they received a report of a man with a gun in the street in the 300 block of South H Street at 12:43 p.m. When officers arrived, the suspect, identified as 36-year-old Michael Mahoney of Oxnard, was pointing a gun to his head.

According to police, Mahoney ran from officers and into a nearby resident. Officers heard a gunshot, but did not know whether he had shot himself or someone else. Soon afterward, Mahoney allegedly confronted officers again, holding a gun to his head. He challenged the officers to shoot him, police said, and pointed the firearm at them in a threatening manner.

Officers opened fire on Mahoney. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he was declared dead.

No one else was injured in the incident. The shooting remains under investigation.
