Jarret Crump, 21, was killed at about 6:30 p.m. Monday sitting in a car with a friend in South Los Angeles. The shooting occurred on Century Boulevard near Vermont Avenue. Crump was earlier reported to be 19.
Crump's mother, Dara Davis, led a vigil outside the LAPD 77th Division headquarters Tuesday evening. She said he was not a gang member.
"I just want the person that's done this to my son to come forward because he didn't deserve this," said Davis. "He worked every day. It's just wrong."
Davis said police told her the shooter got out of a dark-colored SUV, ran to the driver's side of the vehicle and shot Crump. His female passenger suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Police were searching for the shooter and a second suspect.
