Valet companies must have permits in Los Angeles

New regulations are going into effect Saturday that will make it a lot safer for people to valet park in Los Angeles.

Handing your keys over to a valet is about to get a lot safer, because all valet companies and the valets themselves must be permitted in the city of Los Angeles.

Beginning Saturday, the Los Angeles Police Commission, which oversees the valet permit program, will enforce the new ordinance.

It was unanimously approved last year by the City Council. The permits are intended to regulate on- street valet services and help nearby residents by stopping valets from parking cars in neighborhoods and at public meters.

For customers, it provides more protection from theft and damage as companies must carry liability insurance and they have to run criminal background checks on all valets.
