NEW YORK -- Celebrities and the biggest names in fashion descended on the Upper East Side of Manhattan for the 2016 Met Gala. The annual event revolves around a fantastic display of gowns and costumes.
The event celebrates the Met's new exhibit opening Thursday, "Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology," which, according to curator Andrew Bolton, seeks to prove that the machine is an "equal protagonist" to the hand in creating the best fashions of the recent past, present and future.
Fans were mesmerized by this year's fashion at the infamous Met Gala.
"Everyone was just really excited, we were sitting next to this lady, she was just describing every single second of it," said Andrea Castillo, a spectator.
"I think the thing this year, technology definitely start out. It was really cool to see all the different designs. The forward thinking," said Trevor Hinske, a spectator.
Often referred to as the "Oscars of the East Coast" it's a black tie extravaganza held to raise money for the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Yahoo Editor Erica Ostroff says this year did not disappoint, starting with Claire Danes who nailed the theme.
"She came with Zac Posen who designed her dress. It was beautiful blue big and long. It was interesting because her dress was made of organza and fiber optics," Ostroff said.
Katy Perry wearing Prada and Taylor Swift in Louis Vuitton stood out with dark lipstick and jaw dropping dresses.
"Everyone wore silver. Rita Ora actually had it in her hair. It was a total beauty moment and I'm sure more people will be doing that soon," Ostroff said.
And Lady Gaga outdid herself yet again.
"Never disappoints, she came in sky high heels wearing fish nets and a body suit she looked phenomenal," Ostroff said.
And what's a red carpet without Kim Kardashian and Kanye West.
"He made a statement. He came in jeans, but she actually matched with him in a silver sparkly Balmain number. He came wearing contact lenses. His eyes were light and his teeth were sparkling," Ostroff said. "Sarah Jessica Parker is a Met Gala staple. She iconic. She's legendary, she wore an outside Made by Monse it was actually created here in Brooklyn."
Beyonce rocked a skin tight Givenchy latex number.
And Zoe Saldana truly made an entrance in Dolce and Gabana.
"Zoe Saldana came in this big dress, it had a huge train. I think trains were on theme tonight, but hers was special because it was made of all feathers. It was multi colored and it was absolutely stunning," Ostroff said.
