JURUPA VALLEY, Calif. (KABC) -- A Siberian husky puppy that was found inside an SUV driven by a high-speed pursuit suspect is officially up for adoption at the Riverside County Animal Services shelter.

A 30-year-old chase suspect drove an SUV from West Covina through Fontana in the early morning hours of Sept. 11 and ended up shooting a California Highway Patrol officer.

CHP Officer Felix Serpas survived his injuries and is still recovering. The suspect, John Garcia, was taken into custody and faces attempted murder charges.

After the chase ended at Arrow Boulevard and Citrus Avenue, authorities found 6-month-old Chip, a male husky, inside the SUV. Officers contacted Fontana Animal Services officers to pick up the dog.

Chip, named in honor of the CHP, eventually ended up at the Western Riverside County City Animal Shelter in Jurupa Valley.

The energetic dog is up for adoption for the special price of $1, but animal services personnel are asking potential owners to make a $104 donation to the 11-99 Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to the welfare of CHP officers and their families.

Prospective adopters can visit Chip at the shelter and must submit short essays (500 words or less) that are being accepted through the weekend. They can be delivered to the shelter or emailed to shelterinfo@rcdas.org. A decision on Chip's adoption will be made on Monday.
