LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Jimmy Kimmel returned to host "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" Monday night, one week after giving an update about his newborn son.

During an emotional and heartfelt monologue, Kimmel explained, "They found that Billy was born with a heart disease."

William "Billy" Kimmel underwent emergency open-heart surgery when he was only days old and will need another one in the near future.

Kimmel's experience at Children's Hospital Los Angeles touched him in a big way, which is what led to his monologue and the bigger discussion about Americans having proper health care.

The late night talk show host took last week off, after telling viewers about his son's surgery. The family says Billy is doing great.

On Monday, the "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" team tweeted a sweet photo of Kimmel laughing during rehearsal at the desk, surrounded by mariachi musicians.

They wrote, "He doesn't like when we make a fuss, so we did anyway..."

During his monologue, Kimmel shared a sweet video of his son smiling and doing well. He also mentioned that he was surprised he took hits from media outlets last week after speaking from his heart.

"I would like to apologize for saying that children in America should have health care. It was offensive and I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me," he said.

One of Kimmel's guests was Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy. The two discussed the current health care bill that is in the Senate.

The republican said a health care bill should pass the "Kimmel test" and cover pre-existing conditions.

Kimmel also issued the following statement:

If anything, I'd like to thank the many good people here in Los Angeles who responded to our family's situation with an enormous outpouring of love and financial support for Children's Hospital L.A.
