EAST LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A special dedication ceremony was held Wednesday on the one-year anniversary of the murder of Joseph Gatto, father of state Assemblyman Mike Gatto.
Assemblyman Mike Gatto unveiled a memorial highway sign honoring his late father.
The ceremony was outside of Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, where his father was a highly regarded teacher. A stretch of the 10 Freeway leading to the school, between the Long Beach (710) and Golden State (5) freeways, is now named in honor of Joseph Gatto.
"He touched so many lives. He got up every day rain or shine, never missed a day of work in 47 years, and drove that highway, filled with traffic, to come here and teach students," said Mike Gatto.
The elder Gatto was fatally shot Nov. 12, 2013, in his home in the 2800 block of Bright Lane in Silver Lake. The murder remains unsolved, and the motive is unknown.
At LAPD headquarters, investigators appealed to the public for help in solving the murder.
Shortly after the murder, detectives released the composite sketch of a man seen trying to break into a car the night of the murder.
The city is offering a $50,000 reward for information that leads to a conviction.
