Crews fighting Merwin fire in Moreno Valley gain upper hand

MORENO VALLEY, Calif. (KABC) -- Firefighters have a strong handle on a brushfire burning in Moreno Valley after crews made a lot of progress overnight.

There were no visible flames Thursday morning, but CalFire officials said as of 5 a.m., the blaze was 10 percent contained. Overnight, fire officials said the blaze charred 175 acres but that number has since downgraded to 150 acres.

The fire, dubbed the Merwin Fire, was reported near Merwin Street and Campbell Avenue at around 8:40 p.m. Wednesday.

The blaze was not threatening any structures. A total of 125 firefighters are battling the fire which is burning toward Lake Perris State Park.

A group camp area in Lake Perris State Park has been evacuated. The cause of the fire has not been determined. No injuries have been reported.
