Downtown LA fire determined to be arson, LAFD and ATF confirm
DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The major fire that tore through a downtown Los Angeles apartment complex was an act of arson, the Los Angeles Fire Department and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said Thursday.
According to investigators, sufficient evidence has been gathered to determine that the fire was intentionally set. Investigators on Wednesday wrapped up a probe that involved combing through 75,000 square feet of debris, officials said. In addition, photos were taken and community interviews were conducted. Other evidence from the scene will continue to be analyzed.
The Dec. 8 fire destroyed the Da Vinci Apartment Complex, a seven-story development that was under construction. Damage was estimated to be between $20 million and $30 million.
Nearby high-rises and the 110 Freeway were also damaged. The amount in damages to those structures remains unknown.
Meantime, authorities continue to search for two potential witnesses seen in footage taken on the morning of the fire. The witness are not considered to be suspects or persons of interest, authorities said.
