A former metal salvage and recycling yard adjacent to Jordan High School in Watts was ordered to pay more than $1.8 million in restitution.
The fields at Sierra Madre Elementary and Sierra Madre Middle School are both closed off to students.
It's been three months since the Eaton Fire burned through the Altadena area, and public health officials are warning about high levels of lead in soil samples taken outside the burn area.
It's been nearly two months since the Eaton and Palisades fires destroyed thousands of properties, and there are still major concerns about what's in the soil in those two burn zones.
With over 16,000 homes and buildings damaged or destroyed in the Eaton and Palisades fires, the toxic ash produced by those fires could make its way into the soil and into fruits and vegetables that are grown in that dirt.
"They're all scientists, they're sitting up here telling us nothing is wrong," one resident said in a heated exchange with Mayor Trent Conaway. "I want you to tell me why everyone in my community is getting sick!"
