Sale of Yamashiro in Hollywood is end of an era

HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Thousands have dined and celebrated special occasions at Yamashiro in Hollywood since the Glover family bought it in 1948. And probably as many came here for the views as they did for the food.

It was built in 1914 by the bachelor Bernheimer brothers to house their Asian treasures. The authentic Japanese palace was a wonder.

Later, tourists came with home movie cameras to document the unique Hollywood landmark.

Yamashiro had a few other lives -- as a speakeasy, a boys school, and in World War II, it was boarded over to protect it from anti-Japanese vandalism.

Yamashiro and its seven acres was sold for $40 million to a Chinese investor, JE Group.
