MTA: Fare evaders cost agency $2 million

On Thursday, the MTA will consider a $68 million plan to crack down on fare evaders.The plan includes installing gates at all Metro Red Line stations and selected Blue, Green, and Gold line stations.

Currently, there are no barriers in place to ensure passengers have purchased tickets. Instead, deputies do random checks.

Riders caught without a ticket face a $250 fine.

The MTA estimates fare evaders cost the agency nearly $2 million a year.
