Heavy rain and windy conditions overnight may have played a role in some serious crashes. Around 3:00 Saturday morning on the 9000 block of Waterville-Swanton Road in Waterville, police tell us two cars were involved in an accident rolling over off the side of the road. One person suffered life-threatening injuries; a second victim was taken to an area hospital.
Just a few minutes later, there was another rollover crash. This one on UT's main campus. Police say the driver lost control, rolling his car onto its side near West Rocket Drive. The driver was taken to the hospital with what appear to be non-life threatening injuries.
Down the street, rescue crews extricate a woman from her SUV near the intersection of Bancroft and Lawrence. Police say weather may have caused the driver to lose control and slam into a pole. She was taken to an area hospital. There's no word on her condition this morning.
Months of undercover work by the Ohio investigative unit have uncovered fraud and illegal gambling in Toledo. On Tuesday, undercover agents raided the Toledo Carryout, express mart on the 5000 block of Heatherdowns. Leo Sawalha, 43, of Maumee is accused of possessing a gambling device and operating a gambling house. Mohamed Beyrouti, 30, a store clerk, is charged with 13 counts of illegal use of food stamps or WIC benefits and telecommunications fraud.
A convicted killer will not be granted a request for clemency. Ohio governor John Kasich has denied the request from Toledoans Johnnie Baston. Baston is set to face the death penalty next week. He was found guilty in the murder of Chong Mah in Toledo back in 1994. Baston is scheduled to be put to death Thursday in Lucasville.
Fire crews were busy battling a blaze at a home on Woodland near Ewing this morning. Fire officials tell us the home was occupied, but no one was inside. No word on a cause.
Some students are getting ready to head south for spring break, but one group is putting their time off to good use. The Habitat for Humanity team of Lourdes Community College leaves today to perform charity work in areas of Florida. Last year the group went to North Carolina to build homes for the less fortunate.
The economy is taking its toll on free snacks on domestic flights. Continental and United airlines have decided to stop serving snacks in the main cabins in yet another cost saving initiative. A spokesperson for the airline says the cuts will save $2.5 million. American and US airways have already eliminated free snacks in coach.
Autopsy results from a 16 year old Michigan basketball player who collapsed after making a game winning shot show the teen died of cardiac arrest due to an enlarged heart. Paramedics rushed Fennville high school student, Wes Leonard, to the hospital and performed CPR, but Leonard was pronounced dead.
A 4 year old Michigan girl is recovering after being shot. Police near Detroit say the child was in the back of a van driven by her mother when a gunman opened fire on the vehicle. The child is in stable condition at an area hospital. Police are searching for the gunman.
House Speaker John Boehner is standing behind the Defense of Marriage Act. Last month, the Obama Administration said it would no longer defend the constitutionality of the federal law that bans recognition of gay marriage. Boehner says that's an issue for the courts, not for the president.
Police have arrested the man they say is the "East Coast Rapist." Aaron Thomas, 39, is suspected of 17 rapes and other attacks on women since 1997. The attacks occurred in Connecticut, Virginia, Maryland, and Rhode Island.
A pizza man was killed while working in Memphis, Tennessee. Police say two men attempted to rob the delivery man. He refused to give up the cash and the suspects shot and killed him. Authorities are still searching for the gunmen.
The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reports unemployment is down to 9.4 percent for the month of January. That number is down more than a whole percentage point from this last year when the jobless rate was 10.6 percent.
Police in South Carolina are looking into reports that almost 2 dozen dogs were found shot to death in a landfill. At the center of the investigation is the Chesterfield County Animal Shelter. Animal rights activists say the dogs should have been properly euthanized by injection.
Two workers in New York held on for dear life after their scaffolding collapsed. Firefighters rushed to help the men who were trapped for around an hour, 12 stories from the ground. No word on what caused the collapse. The men are expected to be ok.
Hundreds of high school students walked out of class Friday in a demonstration against a proposed immigration bill. The bill would require Arizona public schools to check the immigration status of students. That bill is still waiting approval from the full Senate.
