CARSON, Calif. (KABC) -- A customer who was shot at a Valero gas station in Carson was likely targeted, sheriff's investigators said on Wednesday.
The incident occurred at about 10:10 p.m. Tuesday at a gas station at Sepulveda and Avalon boulevards. The victim, who is in his 30s, was shot after walking into the gas station's food shop. He was taken to a hospital and listed in critical condition.
No other injuries were reported. A search was underway for the suspect, who was last seen fleeing the gas station westbound along Sepulveda Boulevard on foot.
Deputies said the shooting was not a part of an attempted robbery. Rather, investigators said the victim appears to have been targeted.
"The actual incident was very quick. The shooter ran in and he ran out," said Sgt. Fred Binion with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
Surveillance cameras were rolling inside and outside the store and have already been reviewed by investigators. However, investigators have not released that footage.
Deputies also have not released a suspect description. Deputies said there is no larger risk to public safety at this point in the investigation.
