LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Amy Poehler brings pure "joy" to her role in the new Pixar animated movie, "Inside Out." The film introduces us to all those "little voices in our heads" - our emotions.
They include fear, disgust, anger and sadness. Amy is the voice of "Joy."
"The character is kind of a combination of Tinker Bell, Peter Pan, anime, Jungle Book," Poehler said, laughing. "She's like barefoot, she's wearing almost like a 50's sitcom house dress. There's a lot going on."
Poehler said she jumped on the Pixar train as soon as she heard director Pete Docter's idea for "Inside Out."
"I was so excited to be part of it because it's just this message that I love, the idea that no feeling is final," Poehler said. "It's okay to be sad. Joy and sadness have to kind of live very close to each other for you to be a vulnerable person, and also just that moment in a young girl's life right before puberty kind of ruins it all. Where they believe they can do and be anything."
Now that Poehler has a big family friendly adventure on the big screen, is there something more edgy coming down the pipeline?
"We've got a little R-rated action coming your way real soon," she said. "Tina Fey and I are going to be promoting the film 'Sisters' in just a few months that is the opposite of this."
Poehler realizes it's great that in her career she is allowed to do both kinds of films.
"Inside Out" is rated PG and is in theaters Friday, June 19.
Pixar is a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company.
