Synchronized swimming creates workout splash
At the gym you push, pull, lift ... yawn? How about diving into fitness with synchronized swimming with the Aqualillies.

STUDIO CITY, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- At the gym you push, pull, lift ... yawn? How about diving into fitness with synchronized swimming with the Aqualillies.

"Aqualillies is the world's most glamorous, synchronized swimming entertainment company," said Mesha Kussman, founder and director of Aqualillies.

The Aqualillies make a splash at entertainment events but they also teach their splash routines to water babies ages 12 and up.

"And you have women in their 40s, and their 50s, and they grew up watching Esther Williams or looking up to her, so they're interested in kind of experimenting and exploring that area that they might not have been able to do when they were younger," said Aqualillie Tyler Rolling.

Studio City resident Robyn Baker enjoys the class.

"I have a dance background and so one of my girlfriends heard about synchronized swimming, and I love swimming, so I was like, 'I have to try this,'" Baker said.

"The class is an hour and 15 minutes. It's a full cardio work out. You're going to work your core, your tush, your arms. It's full body," said Kussman.

Rolling added, "It's a therapy. I mean, you get exercise benefits and you get that artistic expression as well, which you don't get a lot with regular exercise."

Beyond teaching synchronized swimming, Aqualillies performances bring back a bit of nostalgia.

"When the Aqualillies walk out into the party, it just creates such a buzz. Just the spectacle of having ten girls in matching swimsuits and swim caps is such a source of entertainment. It's kind of this highlight moment, and we leave everybody buzzing," said Mary Jeanette, who does creative and casting for the Aqualillies.

Want to synchronize your workout? You can take classes at the Sportsmen's Lodge Hotel in Studio City, the Jewish Community Center and the Annenberg Beach House in Santa Monica. Burn calories, build some strength and stamina and just cool down a bit.
