The video shows the giant asteroid Vesta, taken June 1 as the spacecraft approached an asteroid belt.
Images also show Vesta's jagged, irregular shape, hinting at the enormous crater known to exist at Vesta's south pole.
Dawn will orbit Vesta on July 16, and NASA expects to release more images.
