Fontana police and the California Highway Patrol responded to reports of an altercation around 6:30 p.m.
According to investigators, CHP officers engaged in a shooting with a male suspect when they arrived.
The officers said they found a female victim dead at the scene. Details were not immediately released.
The male suspect was taken to a hospital, but later died. No officers were injured.
